The world urgently needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We want to be part of the solution and show that dependence on fossil materials in the polymer and chemical industry can be overcome one step at a time.
This is Vioneo
THE ISSUE WE'RE HERE TO SOLVE
Plastics are key building blocks of modern society, indispensable in many of our modern products: from food packaging that helps avoid food waste and lighter car parts that make vehicles more fuel-efficient, to medical equipment that helps save lives.
At the same time, the plastic industry faces significant environmental challenges. Much of the plastic we produce is never recycled, and its production relies on fossil feedstock. In fact, plastics account for around 6% of global oil demand and 5% of global GHG emissions.
If the world is to meet 2050 net-zero targets, it is critical to develop fossil-free methods of plastic production.
Our vision and how we will achieve it
Vioneo aims to pioneer the defossilisation of the chemical sector by using green methanol to produce fossil-free polypropylene and polyethylene at a commercial scale
Vioneo has designed a production method which will utilise de-risked and well proven technologies in an innovative way. This will ensure that its plastics are produced without any fossil feedstock. In addition, the production facilities will be powered by renewable energy, eliminating CO2 emissions from production.
The name Vioneo evokes the company’s commitment to embark on the journey to defossilise and decarbonise the materials and chemicals sector. In Latin, “vio” means “journey” or “way” and “neo” means “new”. The ”o” in “neo” also symbolises “zero”. This means the name translates to “new way” or “the journey to net zero”.
This is what we do
1
Fully fossil-free PP and PE produced from green methanol containing only biogenic CO2, eliminating fossil CO2 from the feedstock
2
PP and PE with a market leading fossil reduction, saving up to 6kg of CO2 per kilogramme of plastic, and with the lowest carbon abatement cost in the market
3
Drop-in, virgin quality plastics with identical qualities as conventional plastics, requiring no process or product modifications
4
Fully segregated and traceable from input to output, without any use of fossil infrastructure or mixed feedstock
Our first production plant
Vioneo intends to establish its first production complex in Antwerp, Belgium – Europe’s largest integrated chemical cluster – with support from Vopak Belgium and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. Expected to begin commercial operations in 2028, the first plant will be able to produce 300,000 tonnes of plastics annually, cutting at least 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
Thanks to its strategic location at the heart of Europe, the initiative has the potential to revitalize the European chemicals sector and position Europe as a leader in defossilising the industry.
A TEAM WITH DEEP CHEMICAL, POLYMERS AND ENERGY EXPERTISE
Vioneo has a seasoned and highly skilled team with extensive experience in chemical and polymer development and operations, construction of large-scale projects, renewable energy and green methanol development, as well as commercial and business building.
The venture is owned by A.P. Moller Holding, who brings an established and large-scale feedstock network to the project.
"Vioneo wants to drive the transition of the plastics industry by demonstrating that fossil-free plastics can be made at full industrial scale."
A.P. Moller Holding appoints Jan Secher as Chair and Alex Hogan as CEO of Vioneo
A.P. Moller Holding has launched Vioneo, a new venture dedicated to transforming plastics production. Vioneo will manufacture fossil-free plastic resins and significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with plastics production.
